The Archives
As I keep making more of these comics, keeping them archived in my general art blog seems to make less and less sense. So I've decided to create a dedicated page to keep track of these babies. Lets see how long I can keep this going :)
#1. The ElboneAww, the one that started it all. I'm pretty sure I ended up just drawing this one in class as we were learning about the different types of joints. Honestly, if any comic sums up the overall goal of this series, it's this one. Intentionally stupid, a little absurdist, and somehow clinging to a very real element of the truth.

#3. Hostile RelationsIt's funny...I still can't explain why I was so enamored with the idea, but I was really, really set on this concept of setting up the intestines as being two national powers struggling for supremacy. At first, I was going to segue the comic into being a joke about how constipation occurs...and boy is the setup there...but decided on just laying out the premise instead and allowing people to connect whatever dots they choose.

#4. Welcome to the JamSo far at least, (I finished comic #14 today) this comic was probably my toughest writing challenge. It's a very specific and weird concept and I struggled with getting the idea across without being too wordy. I went through several iterations of the joke in my 'planning' stage and, even after finishing everything on paper, went on to completely rewrite and digitally overlay a slightly condensed version. Even though I had to pare it down, I want to officially go on record as saying that I am still completely in love with my original descriptor of the jelly being "respectively thick, yet imperceivable". Regardless of the validity of the statement, I 100% want a plaque that says that to be posted wherever I'm eventually laid to rest.

#6. Gettin' OldI feel like I say this about a lot of my comics, but I really had fun working on this one. Sarah helped come up with the Kid Knee/Kidney concept and I really took that idea and ran with it. I think that there's a lot of joke threads to pull in this one, but my personal favorite is that this comic makes me think of a universe where there's some knee fairy out there flying around trading a few dollars for children's patellas. Amazing!

#7. Anaphylactic ShockOh boy; I remember having a heck of a time writing this one. I still have a few alternate versions saved on my computer, but they all felt a little too long or just not quite right somehow. I think it was when I finally came up with 'implode violently' that everything finally came together. Drawing this one on the other hand was an absolute breeze. I had a lot of fun with the pile of bones and the triumphant blobby little appendix up on top of the pile really just cracks me up.

#8. Just for ShowI don't really have categories for my comics (yet), but if I did this comic would fall into the 'very, very close to the actual truth' category. Our skeletal system is basically just bunch of sticks getting moved around by our muscular system. Obviously there's a bit more than that going on in reality but this, I think, is a fun way to think about it.

#9. Natural TalentOh the Saxobone <3 This comic was such a joy to work on. The mispronounced/misunderstood word(s) bit is always one of my favorites (I mean I did start the series off with one) and if I say so myself this one is a beauty. The saxobone itself was a lot of fun to draw up as well. Surprisingly, there's not a lot of 'bone saxaphone' reference material out there, which makes me even prouder of the ridiculous, unplayable creation I came up with. Also, based on internet feedback at least, I believe this has been the most liked and commented on comic to date which is pretty cool too.

#10. Skewed DataThis comic is a bit of a tribute to one of my biggest comedic influences over the years. Now I know I don't have an official "Matt's Biggest Comedic Influences" list or anything, but if I did, Eugene Mirman and his bizarre, surreal comedy style would be right up there at the top. Anywhozle, the joke for this comic is a paraphrased version of a filler joke from one of Eugene's CD's that has always stuck with me. Thematically, I think it actually ties in quite nicely with the Saxabone comic from last week. I believe that we all have the power to influence our own reality. You can convince yourself that you don't have a musical bone in your body and make no effort, or you can accept that, like most things, talents and skills grow and develop only when nurtured. It gets tricky though in the fact that, unfortunately, we must also deal with the innumerous other things that are capable of molding our perceptions and, ultimately, our realities as well. And so now we have this comic. Probably not where you expected a blurb starting with me talking about one of my favorite comics to go but here we are :)
