Jungle Mandala

My nephew Jackson was born back in July and I only just recently realized that I'd done a mandala for his sister so I should probably do one for him as well. He is a Leo and with this year being the year of the Tiger I decided to do a little Liger cub idea for his mandala. I also "cheated" and used a greyscale marker for one of the first times ever and really like the way it worked with the piece.

A fun little sun and sky themed mandala. Was it a cloudy beach day that day? I have no idea. Full disclosure I'm posting this a little over a year since I I did this one.

My mom got me a monthly craft kit subscription for Christmas last year and I've been slowly going through them and picking up a few new skills in the process. I really enjoyed the process of embroidery and took to it pretty quickly. I find a lot of my hatching techniques translate well to doing embroidery.

My sister and brother-in-law brought my niece to MBtS for her first official beach trip (we don't count lake beaches). I couldn't resist doing a special sand drawing and photoshoot for little Ellie :)

I've been on a bit of a mini Art hiatus while focusing on finishing up my Massage Therapy school, but I have been working off and on on this piece continuing the theme I started with my last illustration. I haven't come up with an official title or fully fleshed out the concept but I'm working with the idea of various little pools accompanied by some kind of animal or creature. I'm still tying in a lot of what has come up in various Polarity sessions over the past few weeks. I hope to get back to posting and drawing a little more regularly again, and I already have an inkling of an idea for my next illustration.

A lot of my recent work has been heavily influenced by what I've been learning and experiencing both practicing and receiving Polarity work. After giving me a session one class, my friend described getting a sense of me sitting calmly in the middle of a tumultuous lake which strongly resonated with a lot of what I had experienced in my meditations throughout the session. Almost immediately I had an idea of what I needed to do. I quickly drew out a general sketch of my idea, and then took the next few days adding the outlines and refining it a little. I honestly couldn't be happier with how it turned out, and I even have an idea now for another series, so keep your eyes peeled.

Mask On / Mask Off

Most of the Thatcher Illusion illustrations I've done, at least so far, have been relatively small. For some reason I was inspired to do a larger piece and so over the course of a couple sound healing hours over Zoom with our friend Robin I drew up this little doozy. This was a lot of fun to work on and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Thatcher Illusions

Better late than never I suppose...a lot has changed since my last post in October but I've still been keeping busy with school and art both. One thing I've done recently is a series of "Thatcher Illusions". I got an optical illusion book from my grandparents years and years ago and it had some illustrations that were either by Rex Whistler, or strongly inspired by him. I've re-created a couple Rex Whistler illustrations over the years but this is my first shot at trying some more original designs. It's hard to say for sure, but I think I started this series around November or December or so.

In about another month or so this guy is gonna be an Uncle! Obviously I'm super excited and I knew that I would have to do something special for my little niece or nephew. Luckily, my sister asked for some help with a project of her own that she was working on and it gave me the inspiration for this mandala. Katie asked if I could do an elephant outline for the pattern of a cute little wall hanging. I finished the initial elephant outline pretty quickly, but didn't get started on the rest of the mandala for a week or two (I was still finishing up my last one at the time). Once I got started though it went really smoothly. I really wanted to keep the feeling of this one nice and calm so I really didn't go too overboard with any of the design and I'm really pleased with the results. And, now that the original has made it safely to Katie and Sam's, I thought it would be safe to share.

Art Contest

A few weeks back my Dad forwarded me an email about an art contest that his company was having. The concept was basically just to come up with something showing how satellites help people. The only problem was that 'officially' there were only two age brackets and I just so happen to be about 'double' the 'maximum age'. I have a vague memory of my Dad finding this exchange from the Simpsons particularly amusing and when I heard contest for kids this is immediately where my brain went and I knew I had to send in an entry. So, without further ado, here is my entry for the contest:

My Dad made it pretty clear that my submission was just for fun so as not to ruffle any feathers, and I also sent along a black and white copy as well if they ever need coloring pages for a real take your kid to work day at some point in the future. All in all the whole process was a lot of fun and gave me quite a few chuckles along the way. And if someone at Viasat wants to send me a telescope well...I certainly wouldn't object :)

    Aboudt:

Thanks for visiting my Ardt Blog. You may see a few colors pop up here and there as you scroll down through my work,  but for the most part I tend to do mostly pen & ink and pencil illustrations. I'm always coming up with various projects for myself to work on so you'll see a fairly decent variety of subjects. Please reach out to me through the contact page if you're interested in purchasing a print of anything you happen to like or for any commission inquiries if there's something specific you'd like to see.
